I am **so** excited to introduce you to this weeks Featured Handmade Artist– Kyla from Onelatenight. I received a plush polaroid camera she made as a gift for my birthday last week and I absolutely LOVE it! Not only is it the cutest camera ever, but it’s really well made!

Featured Handmade Artist- Onelatenight

Hi Kayla! Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

My name is Kyla and I currently reside in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I have a love for all things Crafty, Thrifty and Beautiful. My Camera is never far from my side. Currently I’m Keeping up with my Photography, and Crafting 100%. I went to Art College years ago and I’m still really trying to get into a “real” job involving what I know I can do, rather than sitting in a cubicle all day. Thus far ETSY has really offered such a lovely platform for me to do both!

How long have you been creating?

I have been creating ever since I can remember. When I was little I wanted to be 4 things when I grew up; a Figure Skater, Marine Biologist, Artist and a Dinosaur haha. I think I have found my balance within a creative path.

What is your inspiration for making your pieces?

For my handmade pieces I really try and come up with something fun that both children and adults can appreciate. I have a super huge love for photography and my camera’s adventure everywhere with me! I remember when I was little and the camera was always the item that I couldn’t really “play” with as it was breakable and expensive. When I was about 10 Crayola came out with a bright yellow film camera and I was in heaven; I finally had a camera that no one was concerned with me breaking. I was addicted for life!

That memory really stuck with me, and I thought about making something for that in between time that children could really benefit from; thus the Plush camera was created.
I get to custom these little babies into the buyers taste, and each and every one I make seems to get cuter!

What is your most prized possession?

I’m going to cheat because I have two. My camera is like another limb I never go anywhere without it! My second is a letter that my parents wrote to me on my grade 9 graduation; it described dreams, wishes and how proud they are. It is the most wonderful gift they have ever given me; I get teary eyed whenever I think about it!

What would your dream job be?

Oh gosh there are so many jobs I would LOVE to do. I think writing and illustrating a children’s book is so high on my list! Also a friend and I wanted to hybrid this boutique together called “Muffin Tops” because really that is the best part of muffins haha. It would be a baked goods store complete with fun candy and Plush toys. It seems super whimsical and totally me. When I win the lottery that is what I’m doing!

Please describe a little bit of your creative process

I really like to dig back in to my childhood for creative ideas. I think the market is so chalked full of really manufactured 100 times duplicated things, and I like to think that out of all of those things on your shelf the unique ones are the most talked about! Just think boxes and rows filled with shiny plastic toys, and a cute handmade plush thrown right in there. I would be drawn to it instantly.

I like to brainstorm, and then create. If I mess up it’s all part of the process. When I’m happy with a shape and product I create a pattern. I really like to incorporate color and texture. If I can put a button on it, I will! I love them.

One of my big rules is don’t create it just because it’s popular! Ultimately you do want to sell, but you don’t want to sell yourself out. When creating each item; as well as finding thrifted goodies I stop and think would “I” keep this or buy this. I create for myself first and foremost. If I am 100% behind an Item, I can put my name on it and be proud of it being in someone else’s home.

What item would you be secretly heartbroken if it sold?

My plush cameras! I love to make them and get giddy and sad when I mail them out. They are just so cute when they are done I just want to create a wall filled with them! I have a few that I have made just for myself!

As for a thirifted item currently in my shop it would have to be the Creamy Maple Vintage Samsonite Travel Bag. It is literally 2 inches short of fitting my laptop inside. If it did I would rock this bag everyday!

What are some of the ways you promote your work?

Truth be told that is the one thing I’m still struggling with more or less. Right now I advertise on some blogs, but when you first start it’s SO hard to get your name out there. I’ll get the hang of it someday! I do however have my own blog that I love to post in daily!

The Fiction We Live – Blog: http://onelatenight3point14.blogspot.com/
Twitter: http://twitter.com/onelatenight
Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/33124996@N02/

What are some of your favorite books, movies, musicians, and websites?

Truth be told I’m terrible at picking up a book to read it. I’ll do you one worse I actually specifically look for vintage books based on the cover and use the covers and inside pages for crafts! Yikes!

As for movies, I love anything in the Horror genre. Also a good laugh is perfect. Anything with Seth Rogan and Paul Rudd are big on my watch over and over again lists!

When it comes to music I can pretty much listen to anything! I seem to lean towards Florence and the Machine and Marina and the Diamonds a lot lately. Also the fact that No Doubt is making a new album is feeling like Christmas!

Websites I visit regularly are my favourites on Blogger, Flickr, Etsy, We Heart It, Once Wed and The Superficial!

If you could have one super power, what would it be and why?

There are definitely lots of things I would want solely for selfish purposes; and really would make me feel worse if I really thing about it. The most beneficial would be to have a cleaning power. You know in Mary Poppins when she snaps her fingers and the room cleans itself? I would DIE for that. When I was little would snap and try; but it would never work haha.

Thanks sooooooo much Kyla for the awesome stuff you make and for letting us get to know you a little bit better! Please be sure to stop by the Onelatenight etsy shop and check out all the great things she’s made and thrifted!

Hello!!! Happy Monday! Officially, my birthday weekend isn’t quite over. I still have until 5pm today to be lazy and relax. I scheduled my day off today poorly, as I have to work my second job tonight (d’oh!) That’s okay– I had a wonderful wonderful LOOONG weekend and I enjoyed every morning I got to sleep in and every day that I got to go out and take pictures!!!!

Friday (my birthday) I took my mom out shopping for a little bit. We had a blast! It was sooooooooo nice to spend some time out and about with her. I had a yummy dinner at Houlihans followed by cake and coffee at my parents house (a Bern family tradition) Cake and coffee was thankfully uneventful. I totally thought there would be tears (my senile great-aunt), cake throwing (my mom) or arguments over getting my grandma to eat her cake and not feed to to everyone else (getting grandma to eat is sometimes a challenge) Surprisingly, it was quiet and none of my predictions had come to pass! My senile 90+ year old great aunt did sing happy birthday to me about a dozen times though because she didn’t remember if she sang to me or not…**smile**

I went to the Anderson Japanese Garden in Rockford on Saturday. Such a perfect day– cool, overcast and not crowded. Perfect. I got some AMAZING shots of ducks, waterfalls, and even got a bonus shot of frogs!!!

I continued my pseudo-birthday tradition of going to Goebberts to liberate pumpkins on Sunday (PUMPKINS!!!!) I took a bunch of photos and bought some little pumpkins (who will soon be the source of future 365’s…) I will be going back in a few weeks for Craft Fancy’s Digital Photography Field Trip Class! (That’s going to be an awesome class!!!)

Today’s agenda is to relax, relax, relax a little more, lunch date, relax, get a pumpkin spice latte, and then go to work!

Okay– gotta get my relaxing on!

Photo Friday: Unforgettable

Hi! Happy Thursday! I am so excited to bring you today’s Featured Handmade Artist, LiaLane. I love her beeswax paintings. Her images are so haunting. It’s gotta be something with the eyes of her characters… And the beeswax just adds a sort of luminosity to the paintings. I bet these are incredible in real life!

Primitive Folk Art School Beeswax Painting by LiaLane

(Seriously? Look at those eyes!)
Check out some of her other gorgeous paintings!

LiaLane

Hi Lia! Can you tell us a little about yourself?

My name is Lia Lane and I am crazy, awkward painter who lives in her head and the things I make come from there. But when I’m not painting I live in Neosho, Missouri.

How long have you been creating?

I’ve been creating things all my life, but I’ve been doing this folk art thing for a little over 3 years now.

What is the inspiration behind your pieces?

I have so many inspirations but mostly I have this obsessive dislike for getting my portrait taken, my beauty just doesn’t photograph well..(ha!)
So, I make these portraits of girls who can be admittedly awkward, but yet are so beautiful in there imperfections. Oh, and music plays a part as well, really anything I am watching or reading comes into play when I paint. You are what you eat.:)

What is your dream job?

I would love to be a writer for Saturday Night Live, I am constantly making funny skits.

Can you describe your creative process?

Since I use a lot of patterned papers, I usually begin there. I like to paint along with the seasons, right now I am heavy into Fall. So I use papers, paint and feelings that remind me of Fall. Then, Whoa I don’t know it’s like I am in some sort of daze and all of sudden my painting is done. But I do know itunes and loads of coffee are involved always!

What item would you be secretly heartbroken if it sold?

You know I make every painting for myself and then I am SO over it and ready for it to go. And if someone likes it enough to buy, I am always shocked but ready to say goodbye.

How do you promote your work?

I am pretty lazy I guess, because I solely rely on Facebook. I know I probably need a blog, but eh I am just not that girl yet. Hopefully one day!

What are some of your favorite books, movies, musicians, and websites?

I am huge fan of books and music that I feel could have easily been written by me. (If I had their talent ha) I love short stories by Miranda July and Dorothy Parker. I am huge Sylvia Plath fan. I’m a fan of tortured souls. I could go on and on about music but a few of my all time favorites are Regina Spektor, Fiona Apple and Sia. A new obsession is Florence and the Machine. I love woman who bare their soles for us to enjoy.

If you could have one super power, what would it be and why?

Hmm. Is there a super power to heal broken hearts? That’s what I would choose. I would love nothing more than to take pain away from others.

Thank you so much Lia!!! I’ve enjoyed getting to know you a little better, and I hope others have as well!!!! Stop by Lia’s shop and check out all of her beautiful beeswax paintings!

It’s not to late to celebrate Pirates, is it? Happy (Belated) International talk like a Pirate Day!

I meant to post this yesterday in honor of this fine, upstanding holiday but I went to the Garden instead of dutifully blogging, like I had planned. You understand, right?

So, in honor of the belated holiday, here are some fun pirate facts and finds!

Avast! My Pirate Greeting Card– perfect to send to your pirate friends (or, at the very least, it would make cute invitations for your pirate themed parrrrrrty)
Pirate Greeting Card or Invitation by creativeapples

Want to talk like a Pirate? Here are five basic terms to master:

  • Ahoy! – “Hello!”
  • Avast! – Stop and give attention. It can be used in a sense of surprise, “Whoa! Get a load of that!” which today makes it more of a “Check it out” or “No way!” or “Get off!”
  • Aye! – “Why yes, I agree most heartily with everything you just said or did.”
  • Aye aye! – “I’ll get right on that sir, as soon as my break is over.”
  • Arrr! – This one is often confused with arrrgh, which is of course the sound you make when you sit on a belaying pin. “Arrr!” can mean, variously, “yes,” “I agree,” “I’m happy,” “I’m enjoying this beer,” “My team is going to win it all,” “I saw that television show, it sucked!” and “That was a clever remark you or I just made.” And those are just a few of the myriad possibilities of Arrr!

For more Pirate fun and trivia check out the official International Talk Like a Pirate Day site!

Here are a few other fun pirate finds from around etsy! Enjoy!
International Talk Like A Pirate Day Collection from etsy
1. Chicks Dig Treasure

2. PRINTABLE PIRATE HAPPY BIRTHDAY BANNER – DIY

3. An Octopus Love Affair Ring – In Black or White Acrylic

4. SWEET PIRATE OF THE HEART – Skull and Crossbones Verdigris

5. Pirate Ship Medallion Fashion Bracelet

6. FREE WORLDWIDE SHIPPING, PIRATE SHIP PRINT on Antique Vintage 1882 Book Page paper

7. Pirate hat for dogs and cats

8. Silver Pirate Journal , Jolly Roger and Compass Rose

9. Hez the Pirate iPhone Leather Case ( Red )

Perhaps we should petition to create an International Talk Like a Pirate week? I know several people (a hem, debs) who would not mind a week devoted to pirates! Maybe next year…
